Introduction
Wild Strawberries is a 1957 Swedish film directed by Ingmar Bergman. Victor Sjöström, a leading director of the silent period, plays Isak Borg, an elderly medical professor; Bibi Andersson plays Sara. The film covers a single day, as Borg drives to Lund to receive an honorary degree and what he passes on the way draws out dreams and recollections: the childhood summers spent at a wild strawberry patch, the fiancée who married his brother, and a long career conducted at a distance from the people in it. Dream and present action are cut directly against one another without signalling, a treatment that was uncommon at the time. It closes on a dream of his parents waving to him from across the water. The film received the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.
