Introduction
Cries and Whispers is a 1972 Swedish film directed by Ingmar Bergman, with Harriet Andersson as Agnes, who is dying, and Ingrid Thulin and Liv Ullmann as her sisters. It is set in a manor house at the end of the nineteenth century, where the two sisters have come to sit with Agnes and remain at a distance from her and from each other; the most direct care she receives comes from Anna, the servant. Red dominates the production design, in the walls and the drapes, and the scenes are separated from one another by transitions through a full red frame. Sven Nykvist photographed it, working largely in close-up and by candlelight. The film was nominated for Best Picture, unusually for a foreign-language production, and received the Academy Award for Best Cinematography.
