Introduction

The Virgin Spring is a 1960 Swedish film directed by Ingmar Bergman, from a screenplay by Ulla Isaksson adapted from a medieval Swedish ballad, with Max von Sydow as the father, Töre. The daughter of a devout family is raped and killed by herdsmen on her way to church, and the men take shelter that same night in her father's house without knowing whose it is. When the father learns what they have done he kills them, and a spring rises from the ground where his daughter died. The film is shot in black and white by Sven Nykvist, and stages its violence directly and without embellishment. It ends with the father vowing at the spring to build a church on the site. It received the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
