Swedish director, 1918–2007. The son of a pastor, he made films largely concerned with faith, death and marriage, relying heavily on the close-up. He worked with the cinematographer Sven Nykvist over many years and directed extensively for the stage.

Career

Bergman worked in the Swedish film industry from the 1940s and directed extensively for the stage throughout his life, keeping both occupations in parallel. The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries, both completed in 1957, established his standing at international festivals.

From the 1960s the films grew smaller, with fewer characters and more interiors: Persona, Cries and Whispers and the television serial Scenes from a Marriage turn on the relations between two or three people. He worked regularly with the cinematographer Sven Nykvist from that period onwards, and shot much of his later work on the island of Fårö.
