Persona

Persona is a 1966 Swedish film directed by Ingmar Bergman. Liv Ullmann plays Elisabet Vogler, a stage actress who abruptly stops speaking, and Bibi Andersson plays Alma, the nurse assigned to her. The two are sent to a house by the sea, where Alma talks continuously and Elisabet does not answer, and the boundary between them gradually dissolves. The film opens with a montage unconnected to the story, and partway through the film stock appears to burn and the image breaks, placing the act of projection in front of the audience. One shot joins half of each actress's face into a single composite, and has been quoted widely since. It runs a little over eighty minutes and has four significant characters.
