Introduction

The Mirror is a 1975 Soviet film directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, produced by Mosfilm, with Margarita Terekhova playing both the narrator's mother and his wife and Ignat Daniltsev playing both his son and himself as a boy. There is no continuous plot: the film alternates between childhood recollection, wartime episodes, dreams and documentary footage, and does not mark the chronology. The material is drawn from the director's own family history, and the poems heard on the soundtrack are by his father, Arseny Tarkovsky, read aloud by the poet himself. Colour, black-and-white and desaturated passages alternate throughout, and the documentary inserts include Soviet newsreel of the Spanish Civil War and of a stratospheric balloon ascent. It runs about a hundred and seven minutes, and its distribution within the Soviet Union was restricted after release.
