Soviet director, 1932–1986. He completed seven features, marked by long takes, imagery of water and fire, and chronology left unmarked. He left the Soviet Union in the early 1980s and worked afterwards in Italy and Sweden. His book on filmmaking is Sculpting in Time.

Career

Tarkovsky graduated from the state film school in Moscow in 1960 and received the Golden Lion at Venice for Ivan's Childhood in 1962. Andrei Rublev, which he completed next, went without official release in the Soviet Union for several years.

Solaris, The Mirror and Stalker, all made for Mosfilm during the 1970s, were given restricted distribution. He travelled to Italy in 1982 to make Nostalghia and did not return; he completed his last film, The Sacrifice, in Sweden, and died in Paris in 1986.
