Ivan's Childhood

Ivan's Childhood is a 1962 Soviet film directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, produced by Mosfilm. It was his first feature, adapted from Vladimir Bogomolov's short story Ivan. Twelve-year-old Ivan has lost his family in the war and works as a scout for the Red Army, crossing the marshes at the front to carry back intelligence. The officers around him repeatedly try to send him to school behind the lines and he refuses. Scenes at the front are intercut with several dream sequences of his childhood, built around overexposed birch woods, a well, and a beach. His fate is established at the close through German records captured after the war. Vadim Yusov photographed it, working in high contrast with the water, mud and bare trees of the marsh. The film received the Golden Lion at Venice.
