Andrei Rublev

Andrei Rublev is a 1966 Soviet film directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, produced by Mosfilm, centred on the fifteenth-century icon painter of that name. It is built as eight episodes spanning roughly twenty-five years, taking in the Tatar sack of Vladimir, famine, a pagan rite, and a long period during which Rublev gives up painting and keeps silent. The final episode follows a boy who takes charge of casting a great bell after his father's death, claiming to know the secret of the alloy when he does not. The film is shot in black and white and shifts to colour at the end for close-ups of Rublev's surviving icons. It went unreleased in the Soviet Union for several years after completion and was screened abroad first.
