Introduction

L'Eclisse is a 1962 Italian and French co-production directed by Michelangelo Antonioni, with Monica Vitti as Vittoria, a translator, and Alain Delon as Piero, a stockbroker. The film opens as Vittoria ends a long relationship. She meets Piero at the Rome stock exchange, where her mother speculates, and the two see each other over a period that includes a market crash. They agree to meet at a particular street corner, and the last several minutes of the film show only that corner and its surroundings: the streetlamps coming on, water running from a barrel, passers-by. Neither of them arrives. Much of the location work was done in the newly built EUR district of Rome. The film received the Special Jury Prize at Cannes.
