L'Avventura

L'Avventura is a 1960 Italian and French co-production directed by Michelangelo Antonioni, starring Monica Vitti and Gabriele Ferzetti. A yachting party puts in at a volcanic islet north of Sicily, where a woman named Anna disappears. The search finds nothing, and the film then follows her lover Sandro and her friend Claudia as they continue looking for her across Sicily and become involved with each other. What became of Anna is never established. The film works largely in long takes, with the figures frequently placed at the edge of the frame while rock, architecture and empty streets occupy the centre. It was jeered by part of the audience at its Cannes premiere and went on to take the Jury Prize there. It runs about a hundred and forty-five minutes.
