Introduction

La Notte is a 1961 Italian and French co-production directed by Michelangelo Antonioni, with Marcello Mastroianni and Jeanne Moreau as the writer Giovanni and his wife Lidia, and Monica Vitti as Valentina. The action covers a single day and night. The couple visit their friend Tommaso in hospital, then drift separately through Milan, attend a party at an industrialist's villa in the evening, and talk about their marriage on the grounds at dawn. Lidia reads an old letter aloud there, and Giovanni does not recognise it as his own. The exteriors are largely the glass and concrete Milan built after the war, and the two are often divided to opposite sides of the frame by walls and colonnades. The film received the Golden Bear at Berlin.
