Introduction

Nights of Cabiria is a 1957 Italian film directed by Federico Fellini, starring Giulietta Masina. Cabiria works the streets of Rome and is repeatedly deceived and robbed by the men she attaches herself to, and each time resolves to trust the next one. In the closing sequence she is swindled out of her savings by the man she has agreed to marry, and walks alone along a road until she meets a group of young people singing and dancing, at which point she looks up into the camera and smiles. The film is assembled from loosely connected episodes rather than a continuous plot. Pier Paolo Pasolini worked on the dialogue, chiefly the passages in Roman dialect. Masina received the award for Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival, and the film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
