Introduction
La Dolce Vita is a 1960 Italian film directed by Federico Fellini, starring Marcello Mastroianni, Anita Ekberg and Anouk Aimée. It opens with a helicopter carrying a statue of Christ over Rome, then follows Marcello, a gossip journalist, through seven days and nights of parties, film sets and encounters in the street. The episodes are not causally linked and there is no continuous plot; the film runs close to three hours. The sequence in the Trevi Fountain and the closing shot of a large fish-like creature on a beach are the most widely reproduced images from it. The name of the film's press photographer, Paparazzo, passed into general use in several languages as a term for photographers who pursue celebrities. It received the Palme d'Or at Cannes and the Academy Award for Best Costume Design in black and white.
