Introduction
La strada is a 1954 Italian film directed by Federico Fellini, starring Giulietta Masina and Anthony Quinn. Gelsomina, a young woman from a poor family, is sold by her mother to Zampanò, an itinerant strongman, and travels with him performing at fairs and in village squares while he treats her harshly. Years after the two part, Zampanò learns that she has died and breaks down on a beach. The film retains the location shooting and street casting of neorealism, but moves its weight from social circumstance to the relationship between two people, and Fellini's later work proceeds from that shift. Masina built the performance largely out of mime and clowning, with little reliance on dialogue. It received the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 29th ceremony, the first at which the category was competitive rather than honorary.
