Yojimbo

Yojimbo is a 1961 Japanese film directed by Akira Kurosawa, produced by Toho, with Toshiro Mifune as a ronin who never gives his name. It is set in the closing years of the shogunate, in a town divided between two criminal factions; the ronin takes employment from each in turn and manoeuvres them into destroying one another. The film borrows its structure from the American Western, was shot on a purpose-built exterior street, and uses blowing dust and empty frames between scenes; the fights are brief, and Masaru Satō wrote the score. Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars, made in 1964, was an unauthorised adaptation; Toho sued, won, and took a share of the receipts along with Asian distribution rights. Mifune played the character again the following year in Sanjuro.
