Rashomon

Rashomon is a 1950 Japanese film directed by Akira Kurosawa, produced by Daiei, starring Toshiro Mifune and Machiko Kyō, and drawn from two short stories by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, In a Grove and Rashōmon. A killing in a forest is recounted in turn by the bandit, the wife, the dead man speaking through a medium, and a woodcutter. The four accounts contradict one another and the film does not adjudicate between them. A framing story places three men sheltering from rain beneath the ruined Rashōmon gate as they discuss the case, and it ends with the woodcutter carrying away an abandoned infant. The camera is repeatedly pointed directly at the sun through the forest canopy, which was uncommon practice at the time. The film received the Golden Lion at Venice and an Academy Honorary Award.
