Introduction

The Passion of Joan of Arc is a 1928 French silent film directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, with Maria Falconetti as Joan. The screenplay was written from the surviving records of the 1431 trial at Rouen, and compresses the proceedings into a single day: repeated interrogations, a signed recantation, its withdrawal, and the execution by burning. The film is built predominantly from close-ups, with the performers wearing little or no makeup, backgrounds often left blank, and the judges frequently shot from below. Falconetti had worked mainly in the theatre, and this was her only significant screen role. The original negative was destroyed in a laboratory fire; a complete print was found in 1981 in a storage room at a psychiatric hospital in Oslo, and current versions derive from it.
