Introduction
Ordet is a 1955 Danish film directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, adapted from the play of the same name by the dramatist and pastor Kaj Munk. It is set on a Jutland farm in the mid-1920s. Of old Borgen's three sons, Mikkel has no faith, Johannes has lost his reason studying theology and declares himself Christ, and Anders wishes to marry a girl from a neighbouring family with whom the Borgens are at odds over doctrine. Mikkel's wife Inger dies in childbirth, and at the funeral Johannes prays over her before the assembled household. The film is composed largely in long takes, the camera tracking slowly sideways with the figures, the interiors white-walled and lit naturally. It received the Golden Lion at Venice.
