Danish director, 1889–1968. He completed fourteen features, most of them concerned with faith and judgment, and worked in slow lateral takes and spare settings. The Passion of Joan of Arc and Ordet are among the best known.

Career

Dreyer worked as a journalist before entering the Danish film industry in the 1910s, writing titles and screenplays and directing from 1919. He made films in Sweden, Germany and France during the 1920s, completing The Passion of Joan of Arc in France in 1928.

Funding proved difficult for long stretches afterwards. He completed only two features in the 1930s and 1940s, Vampyr and Day of Wrath, and returned for a time to newspaper work. Ordet in 1955 and Gertrud in 1964 were his last two films. He completed fourteen features in all.
