Introduction
Some Like It Hot is a 1959 American film directed by Billy Wilder, with Marilyn Monroe as the singer Sugar Kane and Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon as the musicians Joe and Jerry. It is set in Chicago in 1929. The two witness a gangland shooting, and to get out of the city they dress as women and join an all-female band travelling to Florida. Joe then adopts a second disguise as a wealthy heir in order to approach Sugar, while Jerry attracts the attention of an actual millionaire, Osgood. The film was shot in black and white although Monroe was by then a colour star; the decision was made because the makeup on the two male leads did not hold up in colour. It received the Academy Award for Best Costume Design in black and white.
