Austrian-American director and screenwriter, 1906–2002. He left Europe for the United States in the 1930s after the Nazis came to power, worked first as a screenwriter, and later directed his own scripts. He made both films noir and comedies, writing chiefly with Charles Brackett and later I. A. L. Diamond.

Career

Wilder worked as a journalist and screenwriter in Berlin and left for Paris and then the United States after the Nazis came to power in 1933; his mother and grandmother died in the camps. He wrote for the studios on arrival, for many years with Charles Brackett.

From 1942 he directed his own scripts, working across film noir and comedy in Double Indemnity, Sunset Boulevard, Some Like It Hot and The Apartment. From 1957 he wrote with I. A. L. Diamond instead, through to his last film in 1981. He received six Academy Awards.
