Introduction

Double Indemnity is a 1944 American film directed by Billy Wilder, produced by Paramount, with Fred MacMurray as the insurance salesman Walter Neff, Barbara Stanwyck as Phyllis Dietrichson, and Edward G. Robinson as the claims investigator Keyes. Neff and Phyllis arrange the death of her husband and stage it as a fall from a train, so as to trigger the double indemnity clause in his policy. Keyes becomes suspicious of the circumstances almost at once. The film is told in flashback as Neff dictates an account to Keyes on a Dictaphone, having already been shot when it begins. Wilder wrote the screenplay with Raymond Chandler, adapting a novel by James M. Cain. The interiors make heavy use of barred shadows cast by venetian blinds.
