Pickpocket

Pickpocket is a 1959 French film directed by Robert Bresson, with Martin LaSalle as Michel. A young man living in poverty in Paris teaches himself to steal from pockets and works with two accomplices at the racecourse, in the Métro and at the Gare de Lyon. A police inspector interviews him several times, his mother dies, and a neighbour named Jeanne repeatedly tries to turn him from it. He is arrested at the racecourse and imprisoned, and Jeanne comes to visit him. Bresson cast non-professionals and directed them to speak flatly and without performance; the film relies heavily on close shots of hands and objects, builds the thefts entirely through close cutting, and uses almost no score. It runs about seventy-five minutes, and its structure follows Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment.
