Introduction
A Man Escaped is a 1956 French film directed by Robert Bresson, with François Leterrier as Fontaine. It is based on the memoir of André Devigny, a member of the Resistance held at Montluc prison in Lyon in 1943. Awaiting execution, Fontaine grinds a spoon into a tool to work the panels of his cell door apart, plaits rope from bedding and wire, and communicates with the neighbouring cells by tapping on walls and speaking low in the exercise yard. On the eve of the attempt a young prisoner is moved in with him, and there is no way to establish whether he can be trusted. The film is built from close shots of hands and objects, carries no score, and takes its sound mostly from footsteps, keys and a distant train. The title states the outcome in advance.
