Introduction

Au Hasard Balthazar is a 1966 French and Swedish co-production directed by Robert Bresson, with Anne Wiazemsky as Marie. The film follows a donkey named Balthazar, first kept by farm children and afterwards passed between several owners: Gérard, who works at a bakery, a drunkard named Arnold, and a merchant. He is used to carry loads, beaten, put to work in a circus, and finally shot while being driven across a border with smuggled goods, dying among a flock of sheep. Marie's story runs alongside his; she becomes bound to Gérard and loses everything in turn. Bresson worked with non-professional performers, shot largely in medium and close range, and never has the donkey react in a way that reads as human. The film premiered at Venice.
