Introduction

Late Spring is a 1949 Japanese film directed by Yasujirō Ozu, produced by Shochiku, starring Chishū Ryū and Setsuko Hara. Noriko keeps house for her widowed father and puts off marrying; he tells her, untruthfully, that he intends to remarry, so that she will accept a match. The wedding itself is never shown, and the marriage is carried entirely in conversation and preparation. The film settles the form Ozu used for the rest of his career: a camera fixed low, at roughly the height of a person seated on a tatami mat, moving almost never, with shots of empty rooms and streets placed between scenes. It ends with the father alone at home, peeling an apple. This is the first of three Ozu films in which Hara plays a character named Noriko.
