Introduction
An Autumn Afternoon is a 1962 Japanese film directed by Yasujirō Ozu, produced by Shochiku, with Chishū Ryū as Shūhei Hirayama and Shima Iwashita as his daughter Michiko. Hirayama, long a widower, is urged by old friends to arrange his daughter's marriage, and returns to an empty house once the wedding is over. It was Ozu's last film and one of the few he made in colour, which he used compositionally rather than for realism: a red kettle or a blue shop sign serves as a fixed point in the frame. The low camera and the shots of empty space between scenes are unchanged. It closes with Hirayama humming an old song alone at home. Ozu died on 12 December the following year, his sixtieth birthday.
