Vivre sa Vie

Vivre sa Vie is a 1962 French film directed by Jean-Luc Godard, with Anna Karina as Nana. It is divided into twelve numbered parts, each introduced by a title card: Nana leaves her husband and child, works in a record shop, fails to find acting work, turns to prostitution, comes under the control of a pimp, and is killed in a transaction between two groups of men. One section shows her in a cinema watching Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc and weeping; another is an unscripted conversation about language with the philosopher Brice Parain, appearing as himself. Raoul Coutard photographed it, working on location and in long takes, and Michel Legrand wrote the short piece of music that recurs through it. The film received the Special Jury Prize at Venice.
