French director, 1930–2022. He wrote criticism for Cahiers du Cinéma before directing Breathless in 1960, and spent the decades that followed experimenting with editing, with the relation of sound to image, and with narrative form, turning later to essay films.

Career

Godard wrote for Cahiers du Cinéma through the 1950s and turned to directing with Breathless in 1960. He worked at great speed in the years that followed, completing fifteen features by 1967, among them Vivre sa Vie, Contempt and Pierrot le Fou.

After 1968 he moved to political subjects and collective credit, forming the Dziga Vertov Group with others, and the work left normal distribution. From the late 1970s he worked in video alongside film, completed the eight-part Histoire(s) du cinéma between 1988 and 1998, and structured much of his late work as essay.
