Introduction

The Rules of the Game is a 1939 French film directed by Jean Renoir, who also plays the part of Octave. A group from Parisian society travels with its servants to a country estate in Sologne for a weekend. The romantic entanglements of the guests and those of the staff proceed in parallel, with arrangements, misunderstandings and substitutions running between the two, and the weekend ends when a gamekeeper shoots an aviator he has mistaken for another man. The film is staged in depth and in long continuous movements, with figures passing through the foreground and background of the same shot. A sequence in the middle shows a rabbit and pheasant shoot. It was poorly received on release, cut soon afterwards, and its original negative was destroyed during the war; current versions derive from a reconstruction completed in 1959.
