Jean Renoir
让·雷诺阿
French director, 1894–1979. The son of the painter Auguste Renoir, he worked in depth staging and continuous camera movement. He made Grand Illusion and The Rules of the Game in the 1930s and moved to the United States during the war.
Career
Renoir financed his early work partly by selling paintings left by his father, and made silent films from the 1920s. He was closely associated with the Popular Front in the 1930s, when he made The Crime of Monsieur Lange, Grand Illusion and The Rules of the Game.
The Rules of the Game failed on release in 1939 and was cut; its original negative was destroyed during the war. He left France in 1940 for the United States, worked in Hollywood for several years, and then went to India to make The River. He returned to Europe in the 1950s and worked mostly in colour thereafter. He received an honorary Academy Award in 1975.
