Sunrise

Sunrise is a 1927 American film directed by F. W. Murnau, produced by Fox, with George O'Brien and Janet Gaynor as a farmer and his wife. A woman visiting from the city persuades the man to drown his wife and sell the farm; he takes her out on the lake and cannot go through with it. The couple then spend a day in the city, and are separated in a storm on the way home. It was Murnau's first film after moving from Germany, and it uses very few intertitles, carrying the story through moving camera and constructed perspective, including forced-perspective sets for the city. At the first Academy Awards it received an award for Unique and Artistic Picture, a category not awarded again, along with awards for cinematography and for Gaynor.
