Introduction

Nosferatu is a 1922 German silent film directed by F. W. Murnau, produced by Prana Film, with Max Schreck as Count Orlok and Gustav von Wangenheim as Hutter, the clerk sent to his castle. It is an unauthorised adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, with the names and the setting changed; Stoker's estate sued, Prana Film went bankrupt, and a court ordered the prints destroyed. The film survives because copies had already been distributed abroad before the judgment. Orlok is played with a shaved head, pointed ears and elongated fingers, and his arrival brings plague with it. Much of the film was shot on location in the Carpathians and in towns in northern Germany, and it uses stop-motion, negative footage and shadow projection, including the shadow that ascends a staircase.
