Introduction
Street Angel is a 1937 Chinese film written and directed by Yuan Muzhi, produced by the Mingxing Film Company, with Zhou Xuan as the singer Xiao Hong, Zhao Dan as Chen Shaoping, a trumpeter, and Zhao Huishen as her sister Xiao Yun. The sisters have fled south from the northeast and been taken in by a couple who force them to sing in a teahouse and to receive men. Xiao Hong becomes friendly with Chen, who lives across the lane, and the neighbours try to help her get away; Xiao Yun is killed in the ensuing struggle. The film sets comic scenes directly against the conditions of the people in them, and stages much of the action between facing windows. Zhou Xuan performs two songs written by He Luting and Tian Han. It was made a few months before the Japanese invasion closed the Shanghai studios.
