Shadow of a Doubt

Shadow of a Doubt is a 1943 American film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, produced by Universal, with Teresa Wright as Charlie, a young woman in a small California town, and Joseph Cotten as her uncle and namesake. The uncle arrives from the east and is welcomed by the whole household. From newspaper cuttings and his own behaviour, his niece gradually works out that he may be the man the police are hunting as the Merry Widow Murderer, and once he realises she suspects him he makes several attempts on her life. The film was shot on location in Santa Rosa, California, and Thornton Wilder was among the writers of the screenplay. Hitchcock said on a number of occasions that it was the film of his own that he liked best.
