Introduction

Rome, Open City is a 1945 Italian film directed by Roberto Rossellini, with Anna Magnani as Pina and Aldo Fabrizi as the priest Don Pietro; Federico Fellini was among the writers of the screenplay. It is set in Rome under German occupation: a Resistance organiser, Manfredi, hides in the building where Pina lives, Don Pietro carries messages on his behalf, and all three are pursued by the Gestapo. Shooting began not long after the German withdrawal, using film stock bought in whatever quantities could be found, and much of it was done in actual streets and apartments, with poorly lit interiors used as they were rather than relit. The sound was recorded afterwards and dubbed. The film shared the Grand Prix at Cannes.
