Roberto Rossellini

Italian director, 1906–1977. He shot Rome, Open City shortly after the German withdrawal in 1945, and followed it with Paisan and Germany Year Zero, the three usually grouped together. He made several films with Ingrid Bergman in the 1950s and worked mainly on historical subjects for television in his later years.
Career
Rossellini had been directing since the 1930s, including several wartime films for the Italian navy's film unit. Rome, Open City went into production not long after the Allies entered Rome in 1945, shot largely on location on stock bought in small lots. With Paisan and Germany Year Zero it is usually grouped as his war trilogy.
He began working with Ingrid Bergman in 1949. Both were married to other people, and the affair caused a scandal that kept her out of Hollywood for several years. The films they made together, Journey to Italy among them, were received coldly at the time and taken up later by the critics of Cahiers du cinéma. From the early 1960s he worked mainly in television, on a long series of historical and educational films.
