Introduction

Pather Panchali is a 1955 Indian film directed by Satyajit Ray, his first, adapted from the Bengali novel by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay. It follows a poor family in a village: Apu, his older sister Durga, their parents, and an elderly relative who lives with them. The father leaves to look for work and does not send money; Durga falls ill during the monsoon and dies; the family leaves the village at the end. Ray had worked in advertising and had no experience directing; the cast was largely non-professional, shooting took about three years as funds allowed, and the government of West Bengal eventually financed its completion. Ravi Shankar composed the score. The film received a prize at Cannes and the BAFTA award for best film.
