Satyajit Ray
萨蒂亚吉特·雷伊
Indian director, 1921–1992. He worked in advertising design before making Pather Panchali in 1955, which he followed with the rest of the Apu Trilogy. He directed some thirty films, most of them in Bengali, and wrote and scored much of his own work.
Career
Ray worked in advertising design and book illustration in Calcutta, assisted Jean Renoir on The River when it was shot there in 1949, and decided to make his own films after seeing Bicycle Thieves in London. Pather Panchali was shot intermittently over about three years and completed with funding from the government of West Bengal.
He went on to finish the Apu Trilogy and directed some thirty films across four decades, most of them in Bengali, ranging over village life, the urban middle class and historical subjects. He also wrote, scored and designed posters for his own work. He received an honorary Academy Award in 1992, the year of his death.
