Introduction

Modern Times is a 1936 American film written, directed by and starring Charlie Chaplin, with Chaplin as a factory worker and Paulette Goddard as a young woman living rough. It is built as a series of episodes: the worker tightens bolts on an assembly line until he breaks down and is hospitalised, and afterwards passes through a demonstration, a prison, a shipyard and a night shift at a department store, going in and out of custody several times and making a living alongside the young woman. Two sequences show a trial of an automatic feeding machine and the worker carried through a set of gears. The film is silent with music and effects; in one sequence Chaplin sings in invented syllables, the first time the character's voice is heard.
