Introduction

City Lights is a 1931 American film written, directed by and starring Charlie Chaplin, released through United Artists, with Chaplin as the Tramp and Virginia Cherrill as a blind flower seller. She mistakes him for a wealthy man, and he sets about raising the money for an operation to restore her sight: he takes work as a street cleaner, fights in a boxing match, and repeatedly appeals to a millionaire who recognises him only when drunk. He is imprisoned after being accused of theft, and on his release meets the girl again in the street, her sight restored; she does not at first know him. Sound films were by then established, but Chaplin made this one silent, with a score and effects of his own composition.
