Introduction

Metropolis is a 1927 German silent film directed by Fritz Lang, produced by UFA, from a screenplay Lang wrote with his then wife Thea von Harbou. It is set in a stratified future city where a managing class lives in the towers above ground and the workers operate and inhabit the machine levels below. Freder, the son of the city's master, sees conditions below and makes contact with Maria, who preaches among the workers; the inventor Rotwang builds a machine in her likeness and uses it to provoke a riot. The production employed very large numbers of extras and extensive miniature work, and was among the most expensive German films of its time. The release version was heavily cut, and a nearly complete print found in Buenos Aires in 2008 forms the basis of the current restoration.
