Fritz Lang
弗里茨·朗
Austrian-born director, 1890–1976. He made Metropolis and M in Germany, left the country in 1933, and after a brief period in France worked in Hollywood for more than twenty years, largely on crime pictures and films noir.
Career
Lang directed in Germany from 1919, completing Dr Mabuse, Die Nibelungen and Metropolis in the silent period, mostly from screenplays written with his then wife Thea von Harbou. M, in 1931, was his first sound film.
He left Germany in 1933, reached the United States by way of Paris in 1934, and worked in Hollywood for more than twenty years, largely on crime pictures and films noir including Scarlet Street and The Big Heat. Von Harbou remained in Germany and joined the Nazi party; the marriage ended there. He returned to Germany in the late 1950s for his last three films.
