Introduction

Los Olvidados is a 1950 Mexican film directed by Luis Buñuel. It is set on the outskirts of Mexico City and follows a group of boys living without supervision. Jaibo, newly out of a reformatory, gathers the others to rob and beats a former associate to death; Pedro witnesses it. Pedro's mother will not keep him at home, and he is sent to a farm school, but Jaibo finds him again after his release and both are dead by the end. One sequence presents a dream of Pedro's, shot in slow motion and with reversed motion. Buñuel had gone several years in exile without completing a film, and this one returned him to international attention; he received the award for Best Director at Cannes. It was shot on location, largely with non-professional performers.
