Luis Buñuel
路易斯·布努埃尔
Spanish director, 1900–1983. He made Un Chien Andalou with Salvador Dalí in 1929, then spent years in exile, working for close to two decades in Mexico before returning to France late in his career. Religion and the bourgeoisie recur throughout his work.
Career
Un Chien Andalou (1929) and L'Age d'Or (1930), both made with Salvador Dalí, caused controversy on their Paris screenings, and the second was banned for a time. Buñuel worked for the Republican government during the Spanish Civil War and afterwards went into exile, spending several years at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
From 1946 he worked in Mexico for close to twenty years and at a high rate of production; Los Olvidados returned him to international attention. From the 1960s he worked mainly in France and Spain. Viridiana took the Palme d'Or at Cannes and was then banned in Spain, and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie received the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
