Introduction

Children of Paradise is a 1945 French film directed by Marcel Carné from a screenplay by Jacques Prévert, with Jean-Louis Barrault as the mime Baptiste and Arletty as Garance. It is set around the Boulevard du Temple in Paris in the 1830s and follows Garance's dealings with four men: Baptiste, the stage actor Lemaître, the criminal Lacenaire, and the Comte de Montray. The film is in two parts and runs about a hundred and ninety minutes, moving continually between performances given in the theatres and the circumstances of the performers themselves. It closes with Baptiste losing Garance's carriage in a carnival crowd. Production took place under the German occupation, and several of those who worked on it went uncredited to avoid persecution. It opened in Paris in March 1945.
