Marcel Carné
马塞尔·卡尔内
French director, 1906–1996. He worked closely with the screenwriter Jacques Prévert through the 1930s and 1940s, shooting largely on constructed studio sets. Children of Paradise was made under the German occupation and released in 1945.
Career
Carné assisted Jacques Feyder and René Clair before directing on his own from 1936. He made a series of films with the poet Jacques Prévert, among them Port of Shadows and Le Jour se lève, both designed by Alexandre Trauner with music by Joseph Kosma.
Children of Paradise was shot under the German occupation, with Trauner and Kosma working anonymously because they were Jewish, and did not open until 1945. Carné went on directing into the 1970s to far less attention; the critics of the New Wave placed him in the tradition of quality they were writing against.
