Bicycle Thieves

Bicycle Thieves is a 1948 Italian film directed by Vittorio De Sica, with Lamberto Maggiorani as Antonio Ricci and Enzo Staiola as his son Bruno, adapted from a novel by Luigi Bartolini. Work is scarce in postwar Rome, and the job Antonio obtains, pasting up posters, requires him to supply a bicycle. It is stolen on his first morning, and he and Bruno spend the day searching the city, the flea markets and a police station without result. He finally attempts to steal a bicycle himself, is caught, and is surrounded in front of his son. Neither lead was a professional actor; Maggiorani was working in a factory at the time. The film was shot on location in Rome. It received an Academy Honorary Award, some years before that category became a competitive one for foreign films.
