Vittorio De Sica
维托里奥·德西卡
Italian director and actor, 1901–1974. He was known first as an actor and turned to directing in the 1940s, working over many years with the screenwriter Cesare Zavattini and casting non-professionals on location. Four of his films were honoured by the Academy in its foreign-language categories.
Career
De Sica became known in the 1920s as a stage and screen actor and began directing in 1940. From The Children Are Watching Us in 1943 he worked steadily with the screenwriter Cesare Zavattini, a collaboration that continued for more than twenty years.
Shoeshine, Bicycle Thieves and Umberto D. were made largely with non-professionals on location, and the first two each received an Academy Honorary Award. From the late 1950s he took acting work frequently to raise money, and his own films moved towards comedy and melodrama; Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow and The Garden of the Finzi-Continis brought two further Academy Awards for foreign-language film.
